Runaway 2006
Installation piece filmed in the project called “Project Zebline”.
The “Zebline” was named after the zebra pattern or the black and white pattern shown in the piece.
The theme of the piece is “to show and to see”.
It seems to be silly to see a set of the usual custom all the visitors in museums are just strolling around the enshrined art pieces.
I wanted to form this piece, where not everything about it is revealed, it has its own secrets, unlike the usual approach of visitors in museums that just stand around watching the art from every angle.
Impatience and incomprehension.
I called this work 「Runaway」 to bring the idea that the piece is floating away into the air before the observer has comprehended it.
A drama is always lying under the cover on both sides of showing and seeing.
Runaway (2006)
「Project Zebline」という名前で映像に収めたインスタレーション作品。
Zeblineというのは私が今回作った作品が白黒のゼブラ柄、縞模様で出来ているからだ。
まず日本の家庭でよく使われている障子紙を黒い染料で染める。
それを貼り合わせていき、型の上で乾かし、大きな紙風船のようなものを作った。
その大きな５つの紙風船の中に気象予報用の風船を入れ、ヘリウムガスを入れた。
作品テーマは、「人に見せるための作品」である。
美術作品は美術館で鎮座し、お客が見て回る、その決まった様子がどうも滑稽で、では作品の全貌が出来るだけ見られない作品を作りたいと考えた。
不可解なアートをより不可解にするべく、私は日本のマンガの技法で人が走っている時の足の描き方にならって、客が作品を理解しようとする前に、作品自体が走りながら空へ向かって行ってしまう作品を作ろうと考え「Runaway」と名付けた。
叉、作品にヘリウムガスを入れて空へ浮かばせようとする試みを映像作品として残す事にした。2、3日の間で風速と天気を気にし、風が止んだ時を見計らって空に浮かべようとした。これは結果的に空へ浮かばなかったのだが、それよりもこの作品の重要な点は如何に客に見られない作品を作りだすかなのである。
作品がフワフワと動き周り、人々が何度も持ち上げようとする様子は私達の手に負えないコントロールが効かない、客に憤りを覚えさせる作品に仕上がった。
インスタレーション展示中、他の作品に目もくれずに私の作品の前にやってきた１人の男性客が15分ずっとこの映像を見て、その後作品を蹴っていった。
私はしばらくショックだったが、その後その男性の中に出来た憤りとそれを別の場所で話すであろう事を考えて笑った。
